"With the music moves the listener in the ideal world, the world of our desires and dreams, our ideas of perfection, free from affliction, which suffers from the external world around us, a world unknown to the experience of everyday life. [...] The world is characterized by vast and varied wealth of emotions and feelings, not free from heart-wrenching moments, but always involving anyone who is able to reach the world by listening to music"
PROJECT
INTERNATIONAL LUTOSŁAWSKI YOUTH ORCHESTRA

The International Lutosławski Youth Orchestra performed for the first time in 2013 in the worldwide celebration of the Year of Lutoslawski. Since then, in September every year, young people aged 18 -26 from both Poland and other European states meet together at the Mieczysław Karłowicz Philharmonic in Szczecin and discover the unusual and innovative creativity of the orchestra’s patron. During each edition of the International Lutosławski Youth Orchestra project, the participants measure themselves against the composer's music, presenting his works in the broader context of contemporary music.

To date nearly 300 young musicians from Poland and Europe have participated in four previous editions. Their concerts altogether have gathered audiences of ca. 4,000 people, who together with the orchestra have been learning about the music of one of the most outstanding Polish composers.

This year's edition of the ILYO project will be a combination of the ludic inspirations of Witold Lutosławski and his unique composing style, and the artistic output of another genius, Gustav Mahler.

During the fifth edition of the International Lutosławski Youth Orchestra maestro Rune Bergmann will conduct the youth orchestra for the first time. Rune Bergmann is the artistic director of the Szczecin Philharmonic. The conductor’s uncommon personality and his experience in working with orchestras worldwide will surely give the young musicians a fresh ensemble opportunity.

The young instrumentalists will perfect their skills under the supervision of renowned musicians and educators. During the final concert, the members of ILYO will perform with their teachers and the musicians of the Szczecin Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra.

The final concert programme:
Witold Lutosławski | Little Suite
Witold Lutosławski | Symphonic variations
Gustav Mahler | Symphony no.1 in D-major “Titan”
